New Treatments For Diabetic Kidney Disease

Kidney disease is a serious complication for diabetics. During 2002, almost 154,000 diabetic patients reached the stage of kidney failure known as 'end-stage renal disease' (ESRD) and were either having to use dialysis or have a kidney transplant. The challenge for Diabetics with kidney failure is to stop the kidney disease from progressing. One new treatment for diabetic kidney failure depends on evidence that inflammation may be a significant in the build up of diabetic kidney disease. There are test being carried out on anti-inflammatory drugs which act on receptors for the compound adenosine. One of the main medications, known as ATL-146e, is produced by 'Adenosine Therapeutics LLC of Charlottesville, Va'. Early results show that this drug helps prevent the inflammation that is associated with diabetic kidney injury.
