"I couldn't believe it," said Doctor Michael Salter, an expert in pain at the Hospital for Sick Children and one of the scientists. "Mice with diabetes suddenly didn't have diabetes any more." The diabetes specialists caution they still need to authenticate their evidence in people, but say they expect evidence from research on humans within a year or two. Any cure that may become known would likely be years in approval before appearing on the general public. Notwithstanding the possible delay, the medical experts from Sick kids, whose research was published today in the well respected journal 'Cell', are still immensely exhilarated. "I've never seen anything like it," reported Doctor Hans Michael Dosch, a specialist in immunology at the hospital and a leader of the studies. Their studies upset conventional wisdom that Type 1 diabetes mellitus, the most damaging form of the sickness that typically is diagnosed in children, was just caused by auto-immune reactions, in particular, the body's immune system turning on itself.

What is Diabetes: Diabetes is a malady in which your body does not put out or react properly to insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is necessary to change glucose into energy necessary for daily life. The reasons for diabetes continues to be not known, although both genetics and lifestyle factors like excess weight and lack of physical exercise are thought to be significant factors. Diabetes Symptoms: > The initial symptom of diabetes mellitus is often excessive thirst (that has not been casued by exercise, general heat, or temporary sickness) > Excessive hunger; (you know you've eaten enough, but you are still wanting to eat more) > Needing to urinate often, (often noticeable because you have to wake frequently at night) > Feeling tired and lacking energy (possibly severe enough to make you fall asleep without warning after meals). This is one of the most commonly observed symptoms of diabetes). > Sudden and unusual weight loss (any dramatic change in weight is a warning sign to make an appointment with your doctor)Posted on: 2008-06-16 19:58 technorati: diabetes, diabetic, medical, beta blockers, cholesterol, betablockers del.icio.us: diabetes, diabetic, medical, beta blockers, cholesterol, betablockers Insulin without InjectionsIt seems that the holy grail of 'insuling without injections' is now approved and available :) The full story here: Insulin Without Injections Personally, I can't wait - the sooner I can stop injecting insulin and still live well, the better.Posted on: 2008-06-16 19:57 technorati: Insulin, Diabetes, Diabetics del.icio.us: Insulin, Diabetes, Diabetics What is Diabetes? If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, it means that something is wrong with your body's ability to produce insulin, a vital hormone produced by an organ called the pancreas. This allows your cells to load in fuel in the form of glucose (sometimes called 'blood sugar'). If glucose doesn't reach your cells, they begin to weaken. Also, the unused sugar builds up in your blood stream damaging everything from your blood vessels to your organs. There are 2 common types of diabetes, referred to as 'type 1' and 'type 2'. Broadly speaking, 'type 1' diabetes occurs earlier in life, usually in childhood, and basically means that your pancreas is not producing any insulin at all, or producing far less than your body needs. 'Type 2' diabetes occurs later in life, usually in your 40s, and occurs when your body is making insulin, but is not able to make proper use of it. According to Diabetes UK, there is a new case of diabetes being diagnosed every 5 minutes - that is at least 250 new diabetes sufferers every day! In earlier times, being diagnosed as diabetic meant a lifetime of misery, and a pretty short one at that!. Thankfully, the skill and expertise of modern doctors means that we now have treatments for diabetes that ensure a longer and happier life. We now know that the complications of diabetes can be reduced significantly by a healthier lifestyle, with sensible amounts of exercise and a carefully controlled diet.Posted on: 2008-06-16 19:56 technorati: del.icio.us: |
